About

Ruler of Everything, also known as Do You Like How I Walk? refers to a series of memes set to the song "Ruler of Everything" by American rock band Tally Hall which feature various characters performing actions according to the song's lyrics. Originating from an August 2020 Twitter post, the trend gained popularity in late January 2021.

Origin

On October 24th, 2005, American rock band Tally Hall released[1] their debut album Marvin's Marvelous Mechanical Museum. The album included the track "Ruler of Everything" (music video shown below).

Do you like how I walk? Do you like how I talk?
Do you like how my face disintegrates into chalk?
I have a wonderful wife, I have a powerful job,
She criticizes me for being egocentric.
You practice your mannerisms into a wall,
If this mirror were clearer, I'd be standing so tall.

On August 30th, 2020, Twitter[2] user @radialasymmetry posted a video consisting of clips and images of Big Floppa and other caracals, with the clips reflecting the lyrics of the song. The video received over 100,700 views, 3,500 retweets and 9,900 likes in six months (shown below).

Spread

The video did not spawn a meme format until early 2021, when on January 23rd, 2021, Redditor[3] vinlind posted a Trollface version of the meme to /r/okbuddyretard subreddit, gaining over 16,700 upvotes in two weeks (YouTube reupload shown below). On January 27th, 2021, YouTube user McJimbles[4] posted another Trollface version of the video which uses the ending portion of the song which received over 145,000 views in over two years. On February 4th, 2023, YouTube user Chase Hukill posted poste a complete version of the Trollface version using his own material, as well as vinlind's and McJimbles' videos. The video (shown below, right) received over 2.7 million views in over two years.

The viral spread of the Trollface version in the following days inspired a trend on Twitter, YouTube and Instagram. For example, on January 28th, 2021, Twitter[5] user @harvjavivr posted a Super Mario version of the meme that received over 4,800 retweets and 18,100 likes in one week. On March 24th, 2021, a full-length version of the video (shown below, left) was posted to harvjavivr's YouTube channel "Javi", where it received over 10,000 views in over two years. On February 28th, 2021, YouTube user intense posted a video (shown below, right) using the song along with various cat videos, which received over 500,000 views in over two years.
