(I know these political posts are tiresome, but I'll chime in one more time before moving onto less controversial things. Thanks to those who have tolerated my pages of writing so far, and sorry to the mods for posting three times in a row.
I tried to copy+paste my Pokemon post onto this and delete that post, but it only let me do so within 30 minutes of creating it. If it's possible to delete that while merging the Pokemon section into this, please let me know.)
This is an effect of the polarising nature of internet. Whether it's for better or worse, bashing social justice on Youtube is currently a source of sweet, sweet ad revenue.
Internet Atheism underwent a schism earlier this decade, and a big chunk of the major channels once famous for debunking creationists now spend their time attacking feminism and social justice. I'm talking about the likes of Sargon of Akkad, Thunderf00t, Amazing Atheist, Mundane Matt, Armoured Skeptic etc. Thunderf00t in particular is obsessed with Anita Sarkeesian, and uploads screeds of clickbait about why he dislikes her. This is despite the fact that her videos are a niche interest, and his constant haranguing only adds life to a tulpa he is convinced is a threat.
Even channels as innocuous as H3H3 productions have jumped on the 'lelele TRIGGURED' bandwagon. And why wouldn't they? It gives them millions of views.
I'm not about to say that these folks are instantly alt-right, but they are serving to legitimise alt-right (read: fascist) views. That's the reality of the internet.
Even if a figurehead criticises 'PC culture' from a 'concerned centrist' or even centre-left perspective, that figurehead will attract centre-rightists as well as the far-right.
If a figurehead criticises the far-right, they'll attract a mix of centre-leftists as well as legitimate communists and anarchists.
Gamergate was a prime example. Once Yiannopoulos jumped on board, I knew the 4chan nazis were using it to push their agenda. I'm not saying that all Gamergaters are Mussolini or whatever, but again, the polarising Internet makes this sort of thing an inevitability.
Don't forget the Sarkeesian Effect: a documentary made by a legitimate neo-Nazi writer as well as his accomplice who regularly quotes Ayn Rand. These people were opportunist, alt-right pissants who saw Gamergate as a chance to spread their agenda, and they took it.
It was actually Hbomberguy's video on the Sarkeesian Effect that clued me into all of this, and through which I discovered his hilarious channel.
I guess a Trojan horse is the best metaphor for this? Innocuous concepts such as 'free speech' are used to support a dark underbelly, just like how 'family values' is a purr word for restricting the rights of LGBT people.
(I assure you that the alt-right doesn't care about your freedom of speech, and would gladly restrict your rights if given the chance. They simply found a chink in the armour of people's perception of the left-wing, and gleefully exploited it.)
It's possible that now with a Trump presidency, this discourse will decline and we'll see the rise of anti-anti-SJW channels such as Hbomberguy, Contrapoints, and Lily Peet. I say 'anti-anti-SJW' because while Contra is himself a feminist, he doesn't hesitate to criticise the elements of feminism he finds disagreeable. That IMO is how it should be.
