…While I Play Unfitting Music is a YouTube remix fad that involves users playing scenes from various pieces of media edited to feature music that doesn't emotionally align with the content of the scene.

Origin

In 2007, YouTube user gnomebob (current account: xMAHATMAxGHANDIx^[1]) uploaded "LUIGI WINDS A TOY WHILE I PLAY UNFITTING MUSIC." The original video was deleted, but was later reuploaded on the user's new account (shown below).

Spread

The trend began seeing more popularity over the latter half of the 2000s. On May 19th, 2007, user Saphira4eva uploaded "Spongebob Squarepants music video". Currently, the video has over 946,000 views. The title does not have "While I play unfitting music" in the title, but it is in the description (shown below, left). The same year, MarkieV101 posted an "unfitting music video" set to a scene from Powerpuff Girls, gaining over 495,000 views (shown below, right).

Similar Memes

Videos with the title "While I Play Unfitting Music" eventually grew less popular towards the start of the 2010s, but the act of mixing media with other, seemingly unfitting songs continued to be a popular meme throughout the 2010s. Some popular examples include Thom Yorke Dancing Remixes, The Charleston Dance Remix, Guts' Theme remixes, and many others.
