The memes are likely inspired by "dinosaur tribute" videos, which were prevalent in the mid-2000s and 2010s on YouTube and paired images of dinosaurs with songs, including nu-metal songs.

Origin

On September 16th, 2007, YouTuber^[9] zillatamer posted an amateur music video for Three Days Grace's "Animal I Have Become" set to Jurassic Park footage, garnering over 17 million views in 18 years. This video and other "dinosaur tribute" videos are often referenced in the comments of "dinosaur edit" memes and are likely the inspiration for the format.

Videos pairing mid-2000s hard rock with dinosaur images began garnering attention in 2024. For example, on March 12th, 2024, TikToker^[1] @tyran1954 posted a video captioned, "society: I think the govornment taxes the poor too much awesome spinosaurus edit:," which pairs spinosaurus footage with the rock song "I Hate Everything About You" by Three Days Grace, garnering over 1.1 million views in a year. This video is sometimes mentioned in future iterations of the unexpected dinosaur memes.

On December 30th, 2024, Instagram^[2] user saanti9510 posted a Reel that begins with footage of an anime girl dancing before unexpectedly changing to a compilation of images of the Nigersaurus, garnering over 43,000 likes in two weeks. This is the earliest known example of the meme in which the dinosaurs unexpectedly bait-and-switch the viewer.

Saanti9510 continued to post dinosaur edits over the following weeks, inspiring others to do the same. On December 31st, the Instagram^[3] user posted a version of the meme using a template that compares "bro's mom" to the girl they like, showing the same girl under each header, followed by hard rock music and dinosaur images, garnering over 143,000 likes in two weeks.

The meme continued to spread throughout January 2025 on both Instagram Reels and TikTok. On January 2nd, 2025, TikToker^[4] @herbivorenationalist posted a version of the meme using the "bro's mom" setup that garnered over 1.5 million views in two weeks. On the same day, Instagram^[5] user saanti9510 posted a version using the song "Honeypie" by JAWNY, garnering over 500,000 views in two weeks.

On January 3rd, TikToker^[6] @herbivorenationalis posted a version set to "Animal I Have Become" and used a spinosaurus image that gained over 3.5 million views in the same span of time.

On January 10th, TikToker^[7] @awsma_48 posted an animation about seeing the dinosaur edits all over their For You Page recently, writing in the description, "Fun Fact about me: I was introduced to Three Days Grace through a dinosaur music video back in 2007," garnering over 900,000 views in four days.

On January 12th, 2025, Instagram^[8] user yourlordandsaviorrealjesus reposted a version of the meme that gained over 10,000 likes in two days.
