This Is Someone Dying While Having an MRI Scan refers to a GIF of a zombie flailing through an MRI scan which went viral on Tumblr, accompanied by text claiming it is a video of someone dying while having an MRI Scan, showing the endorphins released by the brain in death. The phrase became a copypasta, attached to other unrelated GIFs and images.
Origin
Sometime in 2011, @Opwronghole (now deactivated) posted a GIF from The Walking Dead Season 1 episode 6[2] depicting a zombie getting its brain scanned to Tumblr[1] (shown below).
The original scene can be seen below, uploaded to YouTube in 2014 (shown below).
Sometime later, user @Chaystar reblogged the post, writing, "This is someone dying while having an MRI scan. Before you die, your brain releases tons and tons of endorphins that make you feel a range of emotions. Tragically beautiful."
Later, @livinglovelyalways commented, "THIS IS FROM THE WALKING DEAD YOU FUCKING IDIOT. DON'T YOU SEE THE AMC LOGO ON THE RIGHT. god". The original post gained over 290,000 notes, but is now lost. A screenshot of the interaction has been reposted numerous times around the web, including a post to Imgur[3] on December 18th, 2012 garnering over 11,000 views in roughly 9 years (shown below).
Spread
As the post spread around Tumblr, @chaystar's comment became a copypasta, as users applied it to other images unrelated to dying during an MRI scan.
Some popular variations that the copypasta was added to include a screenshot of comedian Andy Samberg from the Jizz in my Pants video, a bubbling pizza, and the Tubby Custard Machine from Teletubbies (shown below).
On June 5th, 2018, cryptic-crassulaceae uploaded a version of the meme, garnering over 700 notes in 2 years (shown below). The phrase has since spread outside of Tumblr and is occasionally still attached to unrelated images and GIFs on sites like Twitter[4] and Reddit.[5] On February 29th, 2020, @skyflyinginaction posted a Pokemon version of the meme to Tumblr,[6] garnering over 47,000 notes in a year (shown below, right).
