On March 8th, 2015, WoodenBoat Forum member Oznabrag[3] submitted a discussion thread noting there is a facial resemblance between Ted Cruz and American comedian and actor Bill Murray. On March 23rd, MetaFilter user Palindromic[4] replied to a Ted Cruz discussion thread with a comment likening his face to a blobfish, a notion that would eventually emerge as one of the more popular doppelgangers of the Republican presidential candidate.
On March 24th, the day after Ted Cruz announced his bid for the Republican Party nomination in the 2016 U.S. Presidential election, Redditor discorporated submitted a photo collage of Ted Cruz and ventriloquist's dummies in a /r/PoliticalHumor[5] post titled "Ted Cruz looks like a ventriloquist dummy if you didn't notice." On March 26th, Twitter user @Mobute[8] shared a GIF image comparing the face of the Texas senator to Gabbo, a ventriloquist's dummy used by Krusty the Clown from The Simpsons. Also on March 26th, a single topic blog[9] that features various photographs of Cruz under the tagline "Ted Cruz Looks Like He Is Perpetually Enjoying The Smell Of His Own Farts" was launched on Tumblr.
On March 27th, Rolling Stone[6] published an article titled "What Does Ted Cruz Look Like?" which elaborates on the exploitability of the Republican presidential nominee's facial features.
At first glance, and at every speaking appearance he's made in the three years hence, Ted Cruz's face is a work of remarkable economy for a caricaturist. There are his thick lashes and slightly angled-upward eyes beneath perpetually arched concerned brows and above a mouth usually fixed in a rueful frown or up in a smile as wide and short as the U shape of an industrial sink. You can draw Ted Cruz's face with four thick ink strokes, and looking at him is actually more like looking at the New Yorker cartoon of a person than the person himself.
On April 5th, The Young Turks poked fun at Cruz's facial expression as seeming "insincere" and "smarmy," while calling on the viewers to share photographs of themselves mimicking his look with the hashtag #TedHead.
On June 24th, New York City comedian Glenn Boozan[7] tweeted a side-by-side photograph of Ted Cruz and his rival candidate Marco Rubio, noting that Cruz looks like a "melted" version of Rubio. On August 4th, Twitter user @Kendallposy[10] tweeted a side-by-side comparison of Cruz and Jean-Ralphio Saperstein (portrayed by Ben Schwartz), a recurring character from Parks and Recreation, garnering more than 530 retweets and 850 likes.
On August 6th, a slew of comparisons between Ted Cruz and fictional characters were made on Twitter during his appearance at the first Republican presidential debate hosted by Fox News. Throughout the debate, the viewers likened his face to Mrs. Doubtfire (portrayed by Robin Williams) and Vladimir Dracula (portrayed by Al Lewis) of The Munsters.
On November 9th, the web domain TedCruzLooksLikeaMuppet.org[21] was registered by an unknown party based in New York, New York. On December 24th, Redditor HIPSTER_SLOTH submitted a photoshopped image of Ted Cruz with a smiling face of Kevin Malone (Brian Baumgartner), one of the supporting characters in the American version of The Office, superimposed over his head in a /r/DunderMifflin[22] post titled "I thought Ted Cruz Looked Familiar." Prior to being archived, the post garnered more than 5,900 points.
On April 18th, 2016, Redditor Cutthefeed submitted a screenshot image of Searcy, one of the guests who appeared on the episode of American daytime tabloid talk show Maury earlier that same day, in a /r/The_Donald[23] post titled "Ted Cruz in drag on Maury." The post garnered more than 3,327 points prior to its archival.
