Surprised Joji is a reaction image macros series of YouTuber and musician George Miller aka Filthy Frank looking directly at the camera and making a surprised expression.

Origin

The earliest known usage of the image set was posted by Tumblr ^[1] user thebois on September 14th, 2017. They captioned the image "The first guy who beat his meat must've been like…" The post received more than 7,600 reactions in two years (shown below).

Spread

Later that year, Instagram ^[2] user @grapejuiceboys posted the image and received more than 13,000 likes in less than two years.

A little over a year later, Redditor ^[3] omarys248 edited the meme for the /r/trebuchetmemes subreddit. The post received more than 12,000 points (92% upvoted) and 100 comments in less than one year (shown below, left).

On February 18th, 2019, Redditor^[4] ArtyxMajor posted a version of the meme in the /r/me_irl subreddit, editing the text to read "The first organism to gain sentience must've been like." The post received more than 28,000 points (91% upvoted) and 230 comments in two months (shown below, center).

Several months later, on April 18th, Redditor^[5] posted a version that referenced the Ant-Man Will Defeat Thanos by Crawling Up His Butt and Expanding and the Avengers: Endgame footage leak. The post received more than 78,000 points (91% upvoted) and 490 comments in 24 hours (shown below, right).
