About
Nosferatu is a 2024 supernatural horror film directed by Robert Eggers, best known for directing The Northman and The Lighthouse. The film stars Lily-Rose Depp, Bill Skarsgård, Willem Dafoe, and Nicholas Hoult. The film is based on the 1922 film Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror, which in itself was inspired by the book Dracula. The film follows an estate agent Thomas Hutter as he travels to Transylvania to meet Count Orlok, who soon becomes an irresistible danger to Hutter's new bride, Ellen.
History
Robert Eggers announced his plans to remake Nosferatu in 2015, casting Bill Skarsgård and Lily-Rose Depp in 2022 and shooting the film in 2023. The film follows the newly married Hutter couple as they are plagued by the movie's titular character in 19th-century Germany.
The first trailer for the film was released by Focus Films's YouTube[1] channel on June 24th, 2024, gathering over 16 million views in six months.
The film had its world premiere in Berlin, Germany on December 2nd, before getting a theatrical release in the United States on December 25th, 2024.
Reception
The film has received generally positive reviews from critics and has grossed over $100 million worldwide as of early January 2025. The film received a Rotten Tomatoes[2] score of 8.2 out of 10 and a Metacritic[3] rating of 78 out of 100.
Online Reactions
On December 13th, 2024, Robert Eggers noted[10] that many people in Gen Z know Nosferatu from the SpongeBob SquarePants gag, Who Was Flickering The Lights.
YouTubers Chris Stuckman[4] and The Critical Drinker[5] both gave the film positive reviews on December 2nd, and December 27th, 2024, gathering over 640,000 and 800,000 views respectively.
The film received some negative feedback on /r/horror in late December 2024, as seen in a post[7] by /u/Worldpeacee007 on December 24th, 2024, which called the film "the biggest disappointment of the year," and gathered over 800 points in ten days. Another post on /r/movies[9] gave the film more positive feedback, gathering over 2,000 points in ten days.
Several internet users posted jokes about the character Ellen's repulsion and sexual attraction to Count Orlok, a key theme explored in the movie. X[6] user @defneorsomethin posted a meme about Ellen's strange attraction to the Count over her husband, gathering over 56,000 likes in a day.
On January 4th, 2024, X[8] user @sairated made a post that read, "real wolves and real rats and bill skarsgård in that custom they were just trying to actually kill nicholas hoult," gathering over 200,000 likes in two days.
