About

Minecraft YouTubers refers to YouTube content creators and streamers who make videos exclusively or predominantly about Minecraft. Some of the most popular Minecraft YouTubers of all time include DanTDM, Dream, CaptainSparklez, Jelly, TommyInnit, UnspeakableGaming, Technoblade and PrestonPlayz. Since 2017, Minecraft YouTubers have been a popular subject of memes, with memes initially ironically describing them as the pinnacle of human intellect and courage. Starting in late 2020, following the explosive popularity of several Minecraft YouTubers such as Dream, memes that imagined Minecraft YouTubers being cloned or mass-produced gained popularity.

History

Some of the earliest YouTubers whose content was focused exclusively or almost exclusively on Minecraft are CaptainSparklez, DanTDM, PopularMMOs, Sky Does Everything (previously known as SkyDoesMinecraft) and, for a period of time Tobuscus, all of whom gained major popularity with their Minecraft content in the first half of the 2010s (popular uploads by CaptainSparklez and DanTDM shown below). Other YouTubers that gained popularity with Minecraft videos in the early 2010s include EthosLab, AntVenom, Bajan Canadian and stampylonghead.

In the late 2010s, following the period of Minecraft reestablishing its mainstream popularity through active use in memes in 2018 and 2019 and popular YouTubers like PewDiePie and jacksepticeye starting their own Minecraft playthroughs, the game achieved a new spike in online popularity. In 2020, a number of Minecraft YouTubers became viral, with YouTuber Dream becoming the best-known representative of the "new wave" of Minecraft YouTubers and streamers (popular uploads by Dream and TommyInnit shown below).

Fandom

Many Minecraft YouTubers who accumulated large followings became subjects of fan art, fan fiction and other types of fan labor.

Fans of YouTuber Dream, collectively referred to as "Dream Stans," gained particular notoriety in late 2020 after the YouTuber repeatedly trended on Twitter, often with seemingly random hashtags, which became a subject of viral discussions.

Use in Memes

2017 Memes

In 2017 and 2018, memes about Minecraft YouTubers that ironically described them as the pinnacle of human intellect and courage gained popularity.

On March 15th, 2017, Redditor bunnyclam[1] posted an image macro in which "Minecraft YouTubers" were depicted as being more intelligent and laughing at "Soundcloud Rappers", who were laughing at "people that graduated med school" (shown below, left).

The super-intelligent "Minecraft YouTube" character began spreading in other variations over the following months. Other examples include a Silent Protector variation posted June 19th, 2017 by Facebook page Quality Memes Incorporated (shown below, center) and a February 21st, 2018 post by SPLASH CLUB 7 using a similar template with wolves (shown below, right).

More recent versions of the meme have expanded into other templates. Redditor zaps_twd posted a variation in /r/dankmemes on September 5th, 2019 that gained over 35,000 points (shown below, left). On December 30th, 2018, user Nubulant posted a variation that gained over 950 points (shown below, right).

2020 Memes

In late 2020 and 2021, memes about Minecraft YouTubers being cloned or mass-produced gained popularity, parodying the large amount of "new wave" Minecraft YouTubers rapidly gaining popularity (example shown below).
