About

Herobrine, also known as "HIM", is a mysterious character from a Minecraft creepypasta story. He is portrayed as a non-player character in single-player Minecraft with the default skin and completely white eyes. (See also: Majora's Mask Creepypasta, Slender Man)

Origin

IGN[7] reported that the first posting of the original creepypasta story was on the Minecraft forums.

Herobrine began as a single, foggy screenshot of a distant figure posted on the Minecraft forums. The picture was accompanied by the story of a Minecraft player finding strange, unexplained constructions in their world, apparently the sign of someone or something else being present.

The earliest known thread on the Minecraft forums[8] that mentions Herobrine was posted on August 30th, 2010.

Creepypasta

MINECRAFT ingle-player Mlin aft. Everything was normal at first as l began I had recently spawned a new world i chopping down trees and crafting a workbench. I noticed something moue amongst the dense foq [l have a very slow computer so l have to play with tiny render distancel. I thought it was a cow, so l pursued it, hoping to grab some hides for armor It wasn't a cow though. Looking back at me was another character with the default skin, but his eyes were empty. I saw no name pop-up, and I double-checked to make sure l wasn't in multiplager mode. He didn't stay long, he looked at me and quickly ran into the fog. I pursued out of curiousity, but he was gone I continued on with the game, not sure what to think. As l ewpanded the worldI saw things that seemed made of sand intheocean, and groves of trees with all their leaves cut off. I would constantly think I distance to ar whenever I thought I saw him, but to no avail for the random map ge tor to make: 2u2 TI3 in the deep fog, but 「got a better look at him. I tried increasing my render I saved the map and went on the forums to see if anyone else had found the pseudo-player. There were none. I created my Own topic telling of the man and asking if anyoe had a similar experience. The post was deleted within five minutes. I tried again, and the topic was deleted even faster. I recieved a PM from username 'Herobrine' containing one word: 'Stop.' When l went to look at Herobrine's profile, the page 404'd I recieved an email from another forum user. He claimed the mods can read the forum user messages, so we were safer using email. The emailer claimed that he had seen the mustery plager too, and had a small'directory' of other users who had seen him as well. Their worlds were littered with obviously man-made reatures as well, and described their mystery player to have no pupils About a month passed until l heard from my informant again. Some of the people who had encountered the mystery man had looked into the name Herobrine and found that name to be frequently used by a swedish gamer. After some further information gathering, it was revealed to be the brother of Notch, the game's developer. I personally emailed Notch, and asked him if he had a brother. It took him a while, but he emailed me back a very short message I did, but he is no longer with cha aw him. Here's the onl ITI ges to the world other than m own. I Was able to pr prl whenl yide

Hoax

The Herobrine story was popularized with a hoax that was staged on August 30, 2010 on the Minecraft video stream "Brocraft", now called "Ghost in the Stream." Copeeland, the stream's creator, showed Herobrine, suspected to actually just be a retextured painting or iron door, near the end of the stream at 20:45. The video has since been deleted.

In another stream, Copeeland's friend Patimoose faked a game crash, then put up a page with a default Minecraft face with actual human eyes photoshopped on. According to Minecraft Wiki, the page's source had the following secret message:

It has been reportedd that some victims of torture, during the act, would retreat into a fantasy world from which they could not WAKE UP. In this catatonic state, the victim lived in a world just like their normal one, except they weren't being tortured. The only way that they realized they needed to WAKE UP was a note they found in their fantasy world. It would tell them about their condition, and tell them to WAKE UP. Even then, it would often take months until they were ready to discard their fantasy world and PLEASE WAKE UP.[4]

Spread

The creepypasta image was submitted to FunnyJunk[11] on September 25th, 2010. The first Urban Dictionary[10] definition was submitted on October 12th, 2010. A Creepypasta Wiki[2] entry was created on October 30th, 2010. Several Facebook[12] fan pages have been created, and the most popular page has 8,898 likes as of November 2nd, 2011. The website deviantArt has several pages worth of fan art under the #herobrine tag.[13] On TV Tropes he is referred to as an "Urban Legend Of Zelda", a trope regarding strange rumors about video games that reach urban legend status.[1]

Notch's Response

Notch has addressed the subject of Herobrine via Twitter and claimed that he is not a real character in the game. There were initial reports that Notch confirmed the inclusion of Herobrine at Minecraftcon 2010, but on October 19th, 2010, he tweeted that he had "no plans of adding herobrine."[5]

@notch Markus Persson Herobrine isn't real in any way, no. I never had a brother (well, there's a half brother I never meet..), and he's not in the game. 8 Jan via Twitter for Android

Minecraft Update

On May 31st, 2011, Notch posted patch notes to his site and the Minecraft launcher with the last item reading "Removed Herobrine".[3] The following patch ended with the same remark. This is most likely a joke as Notch has publicly stated that Herobrine is not a real character in the game. It could also be Notch's way of saying that he removed glitches/bugs related to a recent patch.

Minecraft Beta 1.6.6 MAY 31 2011 Unless there are any emergency things to fix, I won't do any more updates before 1.7. Going 362 | Tweet 4K Lk to E3 on Saturday.
