About
Fire Emblem: Three Houses is a tactical role-playing game in the Fire Emblem series released for the Nintendo Switch. The game opened to positive sales numbers and was reviewed favorably by gaming critics.
History
Nintendo first announced a Fire Emblem title for the Switch on January 18th, 2017 in a Nintendo Direct focused on the Fire Emblem series (shown below, left). The title was officially announced at Nintendo's E3 2018 presentation (shown below, right).
Though initially planned for a 2018 release date, the game was delayed until July 26th, 2019.[1] The game was developed by Intelligent Systems and Koei Tecmo, the latter of which worked on "Fire Emblem Warriors".
Gameplay
The game is a mix of school-life mechanics and the series' traditional tactical battle system. It takes place in Fódlan, a continent which hosts three rival nations connected through the Garegg Mach Monastery. The player chooses a nation and guides them through a series of battles. The school-based gameplay has been compared to Harry Potter. [2]
Chris Niosi Removal
On July 27th, Nintendo announced it would patch out the voice acting of Chris Niosi, who played Byleth in Three Houses and Fire Emblem Heroes after the actor admitted to abusing former friends and girlfriends.[7] He will be replaced by Zach Aguilar.
Reception
The game released to favorable reviews from game critics. As of July 29th, 2019, the game has a score of 87/100 on Metacritic.[3] Game Informer critic Kimberly Wallace wrote that the role of the player-character helped facilitate deep connection the characters, writing "This is the most I've ever cared about my Fire Emblem characters."[4] PlayZine wrote the game borrowed elements from the Persona franchise.[5] The game also sold very well in its first weekend, opening at number one in the UK and doubling Fire Emblem: Awakening's first week sales.[6]
Online Presence
Online, the game has a dedicated Facebook page with over 18,000 likes.[8] The game also has a subreddit with over 3,800 subscribers.[9] A megathread about the game in /r/NintendoSwitch gained over 860 points.[10] ZeRo tweeted it was his favorite game in the series and that it reminded of him Xenoblade.
