Anthony Padilla is an American YouTuber sketch comedian who started the video duo and platform Smosh in 2002. Following his involvement with Smosh, Padilla has led a successful solo career on YouTube becoming known for his interview videos with people belonging in fringe communities.

Online History

In 2002, Anthony Padilla created Smosh.com as a way to stay connected with friends during his time at home sick with HSP. On November 19th, 2005, Smosh uploaded their first YouTuber video "Power Rangers Theme" which garnered over 11.8 million views and 136,000 likes in 15 years (shown below, left). On July 8th, 2009, Anthony Padilla uploaded his first YouTube video in which her reads of comments on Smosh videos (show below, right). The video gained over 1.2 million views in 11 years.

On June 14th, 2017, Anthony Padilla uploaded a video explaining that he would be leaving Smosh due to lack of creative freedom (shown below, left). On March 4th, 2020, Padilla uploaded one of his most popular solo videos "I spent a day with MULTIPLE PERSONALITIES (Dissociative Identity Disorder)" (shown below, right). The video accumulated over 4.7 million views an 411,000 likes in a month.

As of April 2020, Anthony Padilla has over 2.8m followers on Instagram,^[6] 2.2 million followers on Twitter,^[7] and 4.22 million subscribers on YouTube.^[6]

Trisha Paytas Dissociative Identity Disorder Controversy

On March 12th, 2020, Trisha Paytas uploaded the YouTube video "MEET MY ALTERS | Dissociative Identity Disorder" (shown below). The video gained over 796,100 views, 79,000 dislikes and 6,500 likes in five days and began a controversy.

On March 13th, 2020, Twitter user @gershyskiss posted Anthony Padilla's Instagram story with the caption, "anthony padilla calling out trisha paytas? fuck i love him" which received over 17,900 likes and 2,400 retweets in four days. His original YouTube^[4] video about DID had gained over 2 million views at that point. The Instagram story show Padilla's commentary on Paytas' video being "claiming you have a dissociative identity disorder is not a cool excuse to mock people in the community and call them crazy."

Later that day, Paytas uploaded the video "Dear Anthony Padilla…" in which she criticizes him for mocking her divulging personal information about her mental health (shown below).

Two Bros Chillin In a Hot Tub

Two Bros Chillin In A Hot Tub refers to a Vine video where Anthony Padilla sings a song about two other men relaxing in a jacuzzi, inferring that they are far apart from each other so they don't appear homosexual. The Vine became popular on Tumblr as an example of heterosexual males being lightly mocked. The video was created by Vine user and former Smosh member Anthony Padilla. The original Vine^[1] was posted on May 30th, 2016 with the caption "what's the opposite of gaydar?" (shown below). There, it gained 74,000 likes, 23,000 revines, and 42.8 million loops.

The Vine was quickly celebrated by the LGBTQ community on Tumblr. There, the Vine gained over 494,000 notes before Vine was shut down.^[2] While popular there, the Vine didn't begin coming a proper meme on the site until June of 2017, when it was adopted as a major meme for Pride Month. On June 9th, Tumblr user bumble-bee-tea^[3] published a Bad Acronym featuring the letters LGBT standing for "Lesbian, Gay, Babadook, Two bros chillin in a hot tub five feet apart cuz they're not gay," gaining over 46,000 notes (shown below, left). User wrecknian^[4] posted a similar joke and gained over 109,000 notes (shown below, right).

Personal Life

On October 7th, 2016, Anthony Padilla uploaded a "Draw My Life": describing his clidhood and eventual move to Los Angeles (shown below, left). The video gained over 5.5 million views and 160,000 likes in four years. Padilla has been open with his struggles with anxiety. On August 18th, 2017, Padilla uploaded a video describing his struggles with his panic attacks (shown below, right).
