About
Osaka "Sata Andagi!" refers to a scene from episode 21 of the anime series Azumanga Daioh where Ayumu "Osaka" Kasuga excitedly and repeatedly says "sata andagi" while holding sata andagi. Sata andagi is a type of deep-fried bun similar to a doughnut. The episode originally aired in 2002 and became the subject of edits and memes as an exploitable throughout the 2000s. In October 2023, memes using the clip became popularized on TikTok after the release of the song "fwyb" by Juanono!, which prominently features the audio clip of Osaka saying "sata andagi."
Origin
On August 26th, 2002, episode 21 of the anime series Azumanga Daioh aired.[1] At one point in the episode, Tomo Takino approaches Osaka, who is holding a pasty, then asks what she's eating. Osaka excitedly says, "sata andagi!" Tomo begins arguing with Osaka, who keeps on saying "sata andagi" (shown below).
The scene became the subject of memes over the following years, although it is unconfirmed where the first meme referencing the clip was posted. The earliest known English-language meme to use the scene is a video edit posted by YouTuber[2] CookieThrower on December 28th, 2006, remixing the "You Are a Pirate" song with the clip, garnering over 70,000 views in 17 years (shown below).

The scene became the further subject of edits and memes over the following years. On July 12th, 2007, YouTuber[3]
jordinyc posted an edit remixing the clip with the dramatic chipmunk meme, garnering over 14,400 views in 16 years (shown below, left). On July 19th, 2009, YouTuber[4] necomeme posted a Sparta remix of the scene, garnering over 14,000 views in 14 years (shown below, right).
The meme continued to prove popular throughout 2023. On February 10th, 2023, u/Agent2169 posted an image macro to /r/okbuddybaka[5] titled "sata andagi" using an image of Osaka's face from the scene, garnering over 1,500 upvotes in eight months (shown below).
On August 13th, YouTuber[6] mushwoom33 posted an original animation using the "sata andagi" clip along with an audio clip of DJ Khaled repeating "bring out the lobster," garnering over 8,100 views in two months (shown below). The clip was reposted to TikTok[7] a month later, garnering over 1.6 million views.
On August 24th, TikToker[8] and rapper @wehateyoujuan posted a snippet for his song "fwyb," which prominently features the audio clip, particularly in the lyrics, "eating that shit like it's sata andagi," garnering over 300,000 views in two months (shown below). The full song was released on YouTube[9] on September 23rd.

The audio was used over 3,500 times in two months, gaining significant attention in October. Memes using the "sata andagi" clip in general also became further popularized that month. On October 3rd, TikToker[10] @sataandagi88 posted a meme that gained over 750,000 views in a week (shown below, left). On October 4th, TikToker[11] @.sp3w4 posted a meme that gained over 320,000 views in a week (shown below, right).
