About
Lilith, also known as Blessed Mother, is an antagonist in the Diablo video game series developed by Blizzard and the primary antagonist of Diablo 4. She is the daughter of Mephisto, Lord of Hatred, and is depicted with gray skin, largely human-like features, wings and several horns coming from her head. Following the announcement of Diablo 4 in 2019 and the game's beta release in March 2023, Lilith became the subject of fan art and memes online.
Origin
Lilith's first appearance in the Diablo franchise was during the Pandemonium Event in Diablo 2, released with the 1.11 patch on August 8th, 2005.[1] In the game, she is depicted with yellow skin, long red hair and four spear-like appendages extending from her back (shown below). Her in-game model is the same as Andariel's with a slight change in color. Although this is her first appearance in the series, it is considered non-canon. On her Battle.net[2] page, she is described as the "Queen of the Succubi and matriarch of demons," although she's also noted as the "mother of humanity" in Diablo IV.
Lilith has since purportedly been mentioned in Diablo 3 and appears in several of the Diablo novels.[3] On November 1st, 2019, Lilith was featured at the end of the cinematic announcement trailer for Diablo 4 (shown below).
Spread
Lilith quickly became the subject of fan art and memes over the following months after the reveal of Diablo 4. On November 2nd, 2019, DeviantArt[4] user kronicArt posted a drawing of Lilith, garnering over 1,000 views in four years. On November 15th, the Chinese Diablo forum bbs.d.163.com[5] hosted a photoshop contest where users were encouraged to photoshop Lilith holding their cat, resulting in numerous images of Lilith with cats (examples shown below). The winner was purportedly awarded pet supplies.
On March 17th, 2023, the GameClips YouTube[6] channel posted a cinematic from Diablo 4 heavily featuring Lilith, garnering over 450,000 views in five days (shown below). An open beta test of Diablo 4 was set for March 24th through the 27th, with some players gaining early access to the beta on March 17th through the 19th. The release of the beta caused a spike in fan content relating to Lilith.
