Kamala Harris' Roe v. Wade Tweet, also known as Kamala Harris Watching TV, is a photo posted on Twitter by U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris in June 2022 that acted as her initial response to the overturning of Roe v. Wade. The photograph showed Harris on a plane, watching the news coverage of the event with a contemplative gaze. Many internet users, both liberal and conservative, found the tweet tone-deaf as it initially sparked controversy. The image then became an exploitable meme was subsequently photoshopped and recaptioned by creators as a form of satire.
Origin
On June 24th, 2022, Vice President Kamala Harris tweeted[1] a photo of her aboard a plane watching news coverage of Roe v. Wade being overturned. She captioned it, "I know there are women out there who are afraid. To those of you who feel alone and scared: I want you to know the President and I are fighting for you and your rights. We are in this fight together." Over the course of six days, the tweet received roughly 35,000 likes (shown below).
Spread
On the same day the tweet was posted, many users reacted to it via quote retweets and replies. For instance, on June 24th, 2022, Twitter[2] user fingerbIaster posted a reply reading, "I love to fight for human rights by watching the news on a private plane," earning roughly 11,700 likes in six days (shown below, left). On June 25th, Twitter[3] user BrittaniWarrick posted a QT reading, "Is the White House social strategy to tweet 'damn that’s crazy' every 16 hours?," earning roughly 104,000 likes in five days (shown below, right).
Many creators started photoshopping the image as well. For instance, on June 25th, 2022, Twitter[4] user CarlBeijer edited Harris' TV screen into a screencap of WWE coverage, earning over 280 likes in five days (shown below, left). Additionally, creators started cropping the photograph to isolate and caption just Harris' face. For instance, on June 26th, 2022, Twitter[5] user nfttradwife captioned Harris with, "me looking at the ipad register before pressing no tip," earning roughly 126,700 likes in four days (shown below, right).
On June 27th, 2022, BrittaniWarrick's QT[3] was reposted to Reddit's /r/BlackPeopleTwitter[6] by Redditor 2050_ where it earned roughly 16,000 upvotes in three days. Also, nfttradwife's tweet[5] was reposted to Instagram [7] on June 29th by the page juggalofamilyvalues, earning roughly 4,300 likes in one day.
