Frieren Stuck In Mimic Chest or Frieren vs. Mimic Chests is a series of memes based on a running gag in the Frieren: Beyond Journey's End manga and anime series in which Frieren gets bitten by and stuck inside of a mimic, which is a creature that resembles a treasure chest. The repeated incident became the subject of memes throughout the early 2020s and became increasingly popular in 2024 as the anime series grew in popularity among English viewers, inspiring redraws and referential memes surrounding the scenes.

Origin

Throughout the manga and anime series Frieren: Beyond Journey's End, there is a running gag where the protagonist, Frieren, continually gets eaten by and stuck in mimic chests, thinking they contain treasure (anime compilation shown below).

The earliest known redraw of an image of Frieren in the chest was posted by Pixiv^[1] user Esu on January 28th, 2021, garnering over 11,000 likes in three years (shown below, left). On August 15th, a Redditor posted a compilation of all the mimic scenes thusfar to /r/manga,^[2] garnering over 520 upvotes in three years (shown below, right).

Memes referencing the running gag became increasingly popular throughout 2023 and 2024. On October 2nd, 2023, X^[3] user @MiyanEatWorld posted a piece of fan art referencing the gag, garnering over 1,400 likes in seven months (shown below, left). On October 28th, Facebook^[4] page Unlimited Meme Works posted a photo of a Frieren stuck in a mimic cosplay, garnering over 16,000 reactions and 1,500 shares in the same span of time (shown below, right).
