I Could Only See Half the Sky refers to a fan art trend inspired by a line said by Frieren in Frieren: Beyond Journey's End. The line comes from a scene in which Frieren tries to lie on Fern's thighs to gaze at the sky, but her view is blocked because of Fern's breasts. The scene became a popular redraw reference as users replaced the characters from the scene.

Origin

On January 12th, 2024, episode 18 of Frieren: Beyond Journey's End, titled "First-Class Mage Exam" in English, premiered both in Japan and on streaming services such as Crunchyroll^[1]. In the episode, there's a scene when Frieren and her party begins the trip to Äußerst. Frieren tries to sleep on Fern's thighs while looking to the sky, but can only see half because her view is blocked by Fern's breasts (scene shown below).

In January 2024, the scene became a popular redraw reference. For example, on January 14th, 2024, Twitter / X^[2] user @nikiomemazoku uploaded Bocchi The Rock! fan art using the scene as reference. The post received more than 4,100 reposts and 38,400 likes in three months (shown below, left). On January 17th, 2024, Twitter / X^[3] user @Edoman1106 uploaded Hololive Virtual YouTuber Fuwamoco fan art that received more than 2,000 reposts and 18,100 likes in three months (shown below, right).

On January 23rd, 2024, Twitter / X^[4] user @Rchellaa uploaded Genshin Impact fan art that received more than 3,400 reposts and 18,600 likes in three months (shown below, left). On April 17th, 2024, Twitter / X^[5] user @linhcoris uploaded Gushing Over Magical Girls fan art that received more than 2,900 reposts and 29,000 likes in one week (shown below, right).
