Hi, i know that i have been not active to this site for a LONG time and this theme is very OLD but, what its your personal opinion right now about this notorious case that happened years ago and that since then many things happened, sadly for the worst. And i say as a former supported that now see this as an ''Old Shame''.

Because it's fucking awful and nobody wants to think about it

Pretending something never happened just makes things worse

GG started as a noble cause against the corrupt media, but fell apart after IA left and it basically stopped doing anything other than justifying it's own existence

GG was, possibly a turning \ point o the net, or just showcasing the turning point, in that it showed corporations they could shut down any criticism by claiming bigotry

A side note, it may have started the whole sensitive advertiser thing too where if everything isn't kiddie proofed you lose ads

*start with "back in my day"*

The thing passed long ago, it's fine to look back at it every now and then. I won't hide that I didn't really like the movement.

They got their head stuck too far up their own ass and saw too many spooks, which ultimately ruined their reputation. When you take on a mindset of "if you're not with us you're against us" people will quickly stop respecting you. Slight criticism would get one called SJW, which became the go-to buzzword and lost any and all valid meaning, but then again that is an internet staple. Should've stopped after a couple of successes and called it a day; since their activity lead to, as JC put it, "stopped doing anything other than justifying its own existance". The earliest articles did lay bare issues in journalism which needed this and got sites to reconsider their quality control, but those were all written before the term "GamerGate" was coined which makes one wonder if an entire movement was necessary.

If they had the self-satire you saw in the early days of the Gamer Joker memes where gamers were mocking gamers using post-ironic humor, perhaps I would've been able to respect them a bit more; like how weebs like to bully weebs. Humor is an important medium, turning gaming into a lifestyle that demands respect is not.

In general, I support the idea behind GG, but I'm hardly an active participant, either then or now. It does surprise me how often GG gets brought up as an "alt-right" boogie-man by certain branches of the media. Would be comical if it weren't so annoying.

First year was one hell of a ride, personally it ended for me with the airplay debate since the opposition didn't even show up. Since then, the biggest parties shifted to other things, the ones that remained weren't relevant anymore. All this shit paved the way for a more radical /pol/-tard populism. With the election of Trump it made me reconsider things more. Yes we can do stuff to "trigger the SJW's", but if it has to make place for radical bigoted ideas, then it's not worth it for me.

Stuff irl calmed down a bit, gamers are left alone to play vidya again, the "gamer-joker"-meme helped to put things more into perspective.

My only regret is that polarization on the internet became worse after all this mess.
I really don't want to live through a shitstorm of that magnitude.

tl;dr: Took the red pill, but then cringed and bluepilled.

LIke an ex GG, i can say that Gamer Gate was a failure for the gamers. It was a golden oportunity for made a real change in gaming journalist for better, but the GGaters allows to racists, misogynists, alt-righters to own the movement and destroy it.
Right now, the movement is dead, and is used by media like a kind of boogieman for force his narrative.

The thing is, there were people in Gamegate who actively tried to curb such things. Perhaps people don't remember Gamergate harassment patrol? Obviously, that was largely ignored by mainstream media.

literally the most pointless thing to have ever happened in the gaming industry, yet it still affects it in so many ways.

not even saying my personal side on the matter, if anything I can't make one. Information is so sketchy and any data about it is so inherently biased that it's impossible to have an actual informed opinion on it.

I have to say while a lot of people say it was a shitshow (and tbh it was) it did help bring some awareness to the public about corruption in journalism.

It was supposed to be just about gaming journalism, but even mainstream news outlets picked up on it to dunk on "gamers" just for some clicks.

gaming journalism. It literally doesn't matter.

Would you say the same thing about joirnalism for other forms of media?
ie movies and literature?

yes. Its not even journalism, its just opinion articles. Actual journalism, which would be factual stories based on research of real events like this for example, are different. Thats actually important. Not "I love this game, 10/10, and i'm not just saying that because the dev had sex with me uwu"

That was one of the major points though, it SHOULD be journalism

Opinion articles aren't, and never should be, considered journalism.

what?
I’m saying that reprting on video games shouldn’t have opinions injected

GG started out about opinion articles on video games. Not real journalism.
Later on, Anita's youtube series on gaming was partly journalism. Her conclusions/opinions on her finding were attacked, but her journalism wasn't unethical or corrupt.

I wasn't aware I was a part of this group before shit start hitting South and my opinions on stuff started to slowly shift. I don't hate gg and they sure as he'll aren't the gamer boogie man some folks make them out to be. They're goals were noble but how it was executed was far from perfect.

I can still agree that a lot game journalism can be problematic since a lot of folks who wrote these barely fucking know how games even work sometimes.

A timeline of my opinions on GamerGate

2014: “Yeah I agree with you 100%! Its about time the game industry get fixed wjat with all the blatant nepotism and laziness within the people in the business. And this social justice and PC nature is just a front to hide from critism. Let’s take on these fuckers FOR THE VIDYA GAEMS!!!”

2015: “w00t! One year and we are totally owning those journalist and anit GG developers! Sure show them SJWs that they can’t bully us. Now its time for us to get serious and try to use the movement to convince developers of both Ondie and AAA to put more effort in making a good game. Seriously Early Access and DLC are starting to get out of hand; so if we can convince high profile journalist to take reviewing seriously, maybe the same can be said for game companies.”

2016 (First Half): “Yes yes that SJW is cringe and clearly knows nothing in regards to the game, but should we be focus making developers like Bethesda, Ubisoft or EA create polished games than bitch about Tracer’s pose being changed after somebody complained? Its not the best use of our campaign and make us seem like reactionaries.”

2016 (Second Half): “. . . Guys. What the fuck? We spent a good year convincing the public we are not a bunch of close minded assholes running a hate campaign bent on ostracizing specific groups of people. Why are we claiming responsibility for getting Trump into office, the guy who personified the strawman we are combating against? And please don’t say “To Trigger the SJWs”. That just makes us look petty”.

2017: “Look, guys. We had something good going with GG. It was the biggest cultural shift in our generation and a wake up call in how we approach the medium. But as it moved along it start becoming a circlejerk dedicated to mocking SJWs and not actually making an impact for meaningful change in the industry. It got so bad that now there’s a comic book related spin off that is dedicated to eliminating “forced diversity” and “diversity hires” that has been ruining comics. The fuck they mean by that? Its too abstract if you think about it. Well at least it ain’t an Animegate, cause that would be PURE cringe right there.”

2018: Well games are getting worse with these microteansaction being a default features in a lot of modern games. Its an actually shady as fuck business practice that needs to be addressed more and stump once and for all. What does GG focus? Get woke, go broke . . . fuck this movement.”

2019: “And now there’s an Animegate. A controversy that seems to only focused on the dumbfuck things Funimation is doing and not the business at large. Oh god the cringe is real with this one. Its actually quite saddening as this all comes back to Gammergate; a movement I was passionately behind because of it wanting positive change to the medium we all enjoyed, now regress to being an echo chamber dedicated to mocking the “esjaydubyas” and “libtards” for “ruining” the industry. I feel ashamed for giving them such momentum and wished it move passed its intial anti SJW stance.”
