Instead, we put eight candidates at a time in an escape room and observe how they problem-solve among strangers to escape. The entire time, I'm watching every move and listening to every word from a control room. I evaluate them using a criteria matrix | paid McKinsey to develop that assesses their ability to solve problems, lead, make decisions, avoid red herrings, and communicate. For the candidate groups that successfully escape, the useless half is immediately eliminated from the interview process. If a group doesn't escape, all of them are eliminated. So far it's been working great and we've managed to hire only 10x engineers. If you want to set yourself apart in this market, you have to do more than that. If you want to truly stand out, truly be unforgettable... send a ransom note. Make sure it's hand written(by the person you have temporarily acquired possession of) and have it delivered via certified mail, requiring a signature. Boom, immediate feedback. Coltin Caverhill • 3rd+ Engineering Manager at Yelp 4d. • + Follow Managers, be very careful what you say to your engineers! I commented in a slack thread. It was a simple comment of "I wish we had feature X". I thought I was being fun. I thought it would get emoji responses and we would move on. The engineers solved it. Do you know how much we pay Software Engineers!? I did not mean for them to work on this thing and solve my issue. But they wanted to make things better, and if the manager points out an issue, they felt like it should be solved. This was not a big deal, and not a ton of time was spent, but it was a good reminder for me that I am not an engineer, I am a manager. And while that title is mostly meaningless to me, it means something to others. What I say magically holds more gravity not because of the merit of the statement, because of the title I hold.
