Know Your Meme
As I mentioned, I have an almost all female party of adventures I game master for. One of the players is my 25 year old daughter. She has been playing since 7 and over time she has brought her various boyfriends over to play. Most recently she wanted to bring over a young man who I met and, as much as he is a buff physical specimen, I wasn't overwhelmed by his INT. I told her that every time she brings over a boy and he plays, she winds up breaking up with him. She agreed and told me that the reason why was because that's how she vetted them. How they acted in the game was their "true nature" and Southern California boys front too much. The young man played a barbarian (thought that would be easy) and during the course of the adventure they came to a watery cave and the female magic users wound up battling an aboleth who was guarding a fabulous pearl the size of a bowling ball. She called for him to help the melee but he ran into the room and instead of bashing, he stole the pearl and ran away instead of helping her and her party kill the monster. I could see it in her cold stare when everyone went quiet. He was asking if he could do that. The party killed off the monster and we ended that session. Needless to say, Gorg wasn't coming back. I personally have had experience with players getting so immersed they react as themselves, often revealing dysfunctional or sociopathic behavior, even though they should be role playing. Have you had any experience with this in your game? Do you feel people act out stressful situations more like themselves?
