About

Yunyun is a character of Japanese light novel and anime series KonoSuba. She serves as a supporting character for Kazuma's party, and a member and future chief of the Crimson Demon Clan, as well as a friend and self-proclaimed rival to Megumin. She is depicted as a young girl with same age and appearance as Megumin, despite being taller.

Origin

Yunyun is introduced in the third volume of the light novel series Konosuba: God's Blessing on this Wonderful World! released on September 28th, 2014. The 4th volume of the manga released on September 9th, 2016, featuring Yunyun on the 24th chapter, and the anime OVA aired on June 24th, 2016, also featuring Yunyun's first appearance in the anime.^[1]

Yunyun has a determined, caring, and innocent personality. She is also quite shy and quick to blush and has trouble being honest with her feelings. She never confronts people even if she knows if they lied to her. Yunyun often takes people's words too literally, partly due to her intelligence. Yunyun is the only Crimson Demon to not display boisterous and eccentric behavior, making her quite a normal person, but abnormal among her clan. This leads her to hold mixed feelings about her clan and is the prime reason for her inability to make friends. However, Yunyun still retains "chuunibyou" antics (meaning childish aspirations) like the others, such as how she worries about other people's opinions about her. Yunyun is also quite pessimistic, always thinking that people assume the worst of her as a consequence of the social ostracizing she experienced growing up in the Crimson Demon Village.

Due to her inability to make friends, Yunyun gets excited easily when someone approaches her to ask her to join their party, but as a Crimson Demon, her eyes will glow bright red in some circumstances, like when she gets excited. This usually leads to her scaring off adventurers who wanted to invite her to their party.^[1]

Online Presence

Online, Yunyun has developed a following as people will make jokes about her loneliness and other characteristics. The subreddit r/yunyun^[2] was created on June 13th, 2010, and has gained over 14,000 followers in ten years. The character also popular in Tumblr ^[3] in memes and fan art (examples shown below)..

One popular strand of jokes surrounding Yunyun is "Soviet Yunyun," which is a fan art of Yunyun wearing Soviet Union-related clothes due to her name sounding similar to the word "Union"^[4] (examples shown below).

Yunyun also makes appearances in Megumin-related memes, mostly to mock both character's relationship. Yunyun often challenges Megumin to do something, but usually loses because of Megumin cheating or lying to win. Megumin also loves to harass Yunyun and swindle her lunch when both attend school.

Megumin

Megumin is Yunyun's only childhood friend and self-proclaimed rival. She used to bully Yunyun, but they still help each other, like when Yunyun learned intermediate magic to save Megumin's sister from getting killed by monsters.^[5]
