You Have Lost Penis Privilege refers to a catchphrase often used in reaction images and ironic memes, particularly when paired with a still image of The Amazing World of Gumball characters Gumball Watterson and Darwin Watterson holding scissors.

Origin

On September 22nd, 2017, episode 35 of season five of The Amazing World of Gumball "The Peteals" premiered.^[1] In the episode, main protagonist Gumball Waterson and his brother Darwin Watterson attempt to help their friend Leslie, a flower, to preserve his looks. In one scene, Gumball and Darwin discover that deadheading (decapitating) a flower can encourage a second bloom, and chase Leslie with scissors (clip shown below).

On March 30th, 2019, Redditor^[2] endortech posted a meme based on a still image from the episode captioned "you have lost penis privilege" (shown below). The author of the captioned image is currently unconfirmed. endortech's meme received over 7,800 upvotes in /r/memes in six months.

Starting on March 30th, the endortech's meme was widely circulated online, including reposts on Reddit^[3][4] and Instagram.^[5] On April 5th, 2019, Redditor^[6] jonnyb3000 posted the earliest known derivative of the format to /r/freefolk subreddit (shown below, left). On April 14th, Redditor^[7] That_other_Triarii posted another meme which received over 13,100 upvotes in /r/dankmemes subreddit (shown below, left).

The format saw another surge in popularity following a viral Reddit^[8] post by MemesForBreakfest2 which received over 30,900 upvotes in six months (shown below).

In addition to the reaction image, the phrases "penis privilege" and "you have lost penis privilege" have been used as captions in reaction memes, as well as catchphrases. Ther reaction image has also been popular in redraws.
