About
Warn Markiplier refers to a series of sarcastic text posts on Tumblr attempting to alert popular YouTube Let's Player Markiplier of imminent danger. They are made in mockery of a sincere text post warning Markiplier of gang violence in Los Angeles and had been an inside joke in the Markiplier Tumblr fandom before becoming a more widespread meme in the summer of 2017.
Origin
On July 28th, 2015, Tumblr user @watermelonjeager,[1] since deactivated, posted:
"There is a gang war in LA. The first gang to get to 100 kills, gets to take over that part of the city. You NEED to be careful, Mark. You could be at high risk because of your high status. PLEASE be safe, everyone in or around LA, and please reblog this to get it to the youtubers in LA.
I just worry about their safety.
markiplier stay safe! <3"
The post gained over 15,000 notes.
Spread
The meme did not begin spreading through Tumblr until two years later. Meme Documentation traces the moment "Warn Markiplier" became a meme to a reblog of the original post by Tumblr user fakelaurent[2] which added a picture of two people boxing, with the winning person labeled "Los Angeles Gangs" and the losing person labeled "Markiplier" (shown below).
This iteration features a reblog from since deleted Tumblr kairokurusakuraaono which refers to Markiplier as "markimoo," which would be referenced in future jokes. For example, on October 5th, 2015, user themysteriousmurasamecastle[3] posted a joke post that announced Markiplier's death via gang violence, ending with "You be missed, Markipoo" (shown below). Coincidentally, Markiplier started a YouTube series called "Who Killed Markiplier?" five days later.[4]
The majority of the jokes are text-based and remain relatively contained within the Markiplier fandom. One exception features a riff on the joke crossed with Darth Plagueis the Wise which gained over 24,000 notes (shown below). Meme Documentation[5] covered the spread of the jokes on October 22nd, 2017.
