VSCO Girl

About

VSCO Girl refers to an aesthetic adopted by people who frequently use the VSCO photo editing application.^[3] The style is typically associated with a variety of clothing and accessories, including scrunchies, hydro flasks, Kanken bags and tube tops, along with a care-free demeanor. In summer 2019, Instagram and TikTok users began posting about sleepovers that abide by the VSCO aesthetic.

Origin

On July 10th, 2017, Galore Magazine^[1] published an article on the popularity of VSCO filters and how the use of the app may help curate a persons aesthetic. On January 30th, 2019, YouTuber Greer Jones uploaded the first how-to video regarding VSCO girls (shown below). The video has garnered over 179,400 views ad 8,400 likes in six months.

On June 14th, 2019, Urban Dictionary^[2] user yeeyee gorl defined "VSCO girl" as "a very aesthetically pleasing (extremely pretty) girl who edits all her instagram pictures with the vsco app with the filter C1. She will normally have a hydroflask, any type of choker, fjallraven kanken, or a polaroid camera." In July, more YouTubers began uploading videos outlining the aesthic gaining upwards of 14,000 views each (shown below). As of July, 8th, the hashtag #vscogirl was used in over 916,200 Instagram posts.

VSCO Girl Sleepovers

In June 2019, TikTok users began uploading videos of themselves creating the perfect VSCO sleepover. A VSCO sleepover is a typical teenage girl sleepover that may be held floating on a pool, sleeping on a trampoline, and always involving decorative lights and sheets. The sleepovers are centered around being aesthetically pleasing enough to post pictures of on social media. On June 13th, 2019, TikTok user @madison.casper uploaded a video of herself and a friend decorating for a sleepover (shown below, left). The video garnered over 8,900 likes and 300 retweets in two months. On June 23rd, @nataliafaithxx and @charw_23 posted videos of their VSCO sleepovers gaining over 731,300 likes and 30,200 likes respectively in a month (shown below, right).

In July, Instagram was flooded with VSCO sleepover inspiration posts. On July 5th, Instagram user vsco1n5po^[4] posted a photo of girls having a sleepover in a pool which gained over 140 likes in a month (shown below, left). On July 12th, Instagram user vsco_lovess^[5] posted a trampoline fort inspiration using the hashtag #vscosleepover which garnered over 300 likes in a month (shown below, right).
