Little Witch Academia (リトルウィッチアカデミア Ritoru Witchi Akademia) is a Japanese anime franchise created by Yoh Yoshinari and produced by Studio Trigger.

Synopsis

Little Witch Academia takes place at Luna Nova Magical Academy, a prestigious school for young girls training to become witches. Having been inspired by a witch named Shiny Chariot, a girl named Atsuko "Akko" Kagari enrolls at Luna Nova Magical Academy to become a witch, but struggles due to her non-magical background. This all changes when she discovers the Shiny Rod, a powerful magic relic left behind by Chariot.^[1]

Short Films

Little Witch Academia (short film) was produced by Trigger as part of the Young Animator Training Project's Anime Mirai 2013 project^[2]. The short was created and directed by Yoh Yoshinari and written by Masahiko Otsuka with music by Michiru Ōshima. The short was released (alongside Anime Mirai Short) on 14 Japanese theaters on March 2, 2013 and lTER released on YouTube and Crunchryroll on April 19, 2013 before it was removed to promote the Blu-Ray release. later, the Blu-Ray version was released on October 24, 2013

Little Witch Academia: The Enchanted Parade is a sequel to the first film. to extend the runtime, a Kickstarter campaign was announced and launched on July 9, 2013 and met its $150,000 USD goal within five hours, finishing with a total of $625,518 USD.^[3] The short premiered at Anime Expo 2015 and was made available for Kickstarter backers on July 3, 2015 and was subsequently released in Japanese theaters on October 9, 2015.

Both films were later released on Netflix on December 15, 2015.^[4][5]

Television series

Little Witch Academia (TV Anime) is a 2017 anime television series created by Yoh Yoshinari and produced by Trigger, based on the original short films released in 2013 and 2015 respectively.

The TV Anime was announced on June 24, 2016, following the final episode of Space Patrol Luluco, and all episodes has been aired in Japan between January 9th, 2017 and June 25th, 2017. Netflix began streaming the series' first half with an English dub on June 30, 2017 globally while the second half was released as the show's "second season" on August 15, 2017.^[6]

Manga

A short one-shot manga drawn by Terio Teri, was published in Ultra Jump magazine on August 19, 2013.^[7] another manga, drawn by Teri, featuring an original story, was again serialized in Ultra Jump between August 19, 2015 and November 20, 2015.^[8]

Little Witch Academia: The Midnight Crown is a manga series illustrated by Yuka Fujiwara and published in Ribon Magazine from September 3, 2015 till December 28, 2015.^[8] A manga adaptation of the TV anime series, illustrated by Keisuke Satō began serialization on January 26, 2017.^[9]

Video Game

Little Witch Academia: Chamber of Time is an action role-playing video game developed by A+ Games and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. The game was released on the PlayStation 4 in Japan in November 30th, 2017, and worldwide for PlayStation 4 and PC on May 15th, 2018.

The Game was met with mixed or average reviews, with a Score of 58 on both Metacritic^[10] and Opencritic^[11] & 56.74%^[12] on GameRankings.

Reception

The series has been praised for its Art Style, Setting, Tone and Characters. The short films (LWA Short Film and Little Witch Academia: The Enchanted Parade) has a average rating of 7.96^[13] and 7.89^[14] on MyAnimeList, respectively. while the TV Anime has a higher average score of 8.12^[15].
