Lego Fortnite is a 2023 spinoff of Fortnite launched by Epic Games in December 2023. Adding mechanics of LEGO video games to Fortnite and similar in its gameplay to Minecraft, the game mode saw viral popularity at the time of its launch, with people sharing humorous videos created in the mode and posting memes about it.

History

On December 6th, 2023, a cinematic trailer for LEGO Fortnite, a game mode in the battle royale video game Fortnite, was released. The trailer accumulated over 8.4 million views on YouTube^[1] in one week.

On December 7th, 2023, the LEGO Fortnite mod was officially added to Fortnite.^[2]

On the day of its release, LEGO Fortnite was the most-played Fortnite mode, peaking at over 2.4 million concurrent players.^[3]

Online Discussions

Immediately following its release, LEGO Fortnite became a viral topic of discussions online. Notably, the game was compared against Minecraft, as the mode featured exploration, building and crafting similar to the popular game. For example, on December 8th, 2023, tweleb @kirawontmiss posted a meme that received over 2,200 reposts and 46,000 likes on X^[4] in four days (shown below).

For example, on December 7th, 2023, TikTok^[5] user @taka_moyamoya2 posted a video instruction for building a car in LEGO Fortnite that received over 186,000 likes in five days (shown below, left). Also that day, TikTok^[6] user @hatodeiji posted a clip that received over 1.4 million likes in the same period (shown below, right).
