About
Instagram Wrapped refers to an unofficial personalized and statistical compilation of an Instagram user's stats, similar to Spotify Wrapped, which has a yearly awaited trend for allowing users to review their most listened-to songs on the platform. In Instagram's case, however, it isn’t an in-app feature created by Meta, but a third-party application that you can only access the Instagram Wrapped report by downloading the app known as Wrapped – owned by Wrapped Labs LLC. The feature became a trending topic on the internet, with users divided and concerned about what type of stats the tool would show.
History
Instagram Wrapped official feature was first mentioned on December 10th, 2021, known as "2021 Playback,"[1] which allowed users to look back at the Stories posted over the past year. Unlike Spotify Wrapped, the Instagram feature automatically selects up to ten Stories and uses them to create a memory reel, which you can edit, add, or remove posts from the reels. YouTube[2] user posted a video showing how to use the Playback Stories feature (shown below), amassing over 20,000 views and 97 likes in two years.
2023 Instagram Wrapped
On November 4th, 2023, an unofficial application was released for Android and Apple Store, allegedly creating a new version of the Instagram Wrapped feature. The "Wrapped for Instagram" app is developed by Wrapped Labs[3] and, on its surface, is similar to Spotify Wrapped, showing users “top friends” this year, who they interacted with the most and which of their Instagram stories were the most popular. A Yahoo News[4] article posted on November 6th, 2023, explained the app might not be safe for users, as "Instagram’s data policy is notoriously strict when it comes to sharing private information."
Online Reactions
In November 2023, people online weren't reacting strongly to the new Instagram Wrapped feature. For instance, on November 6th, 2023, TIkTok[5] user @alannajeanhill posted a video mocking people who purchased the app, asking for their credit card and security number (shown below, left), which amassed roughly 40,000 plays and 2,000 likes in a day. On November 5th, TikTok[6] user @d0gluvr777 posted a video about her reaction when a person found out she was the number stalker on the Instagram Wrapped (shown below, right). The post received more than 734,000 plays and 121,000 likes in two days.

Another common reaction to Instagram Wrapped was the fear of Twitter / X also releasing a similar feature. For example, on November 7th, 2023, X[7] user @avrgcrybby posted a reaction video paired with the caption "I'm not scared of Instagram wrapped but if (god forbid) Twitter comes up with this feature wallah to god im ending it all." The post (shown below) garnered roughly 202 views and 5 likes in a few hours.
