Gainax

Studio Gainax is a Japanese anime studio founded in 1984, and is responsible for multiple popular anime series, most notably Gunbuster, Neon Genesis Evangelion, FLCL, Gurren Lagann and Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt. The studio has gained a large following online, particularly in the anime community.

History

Studio Gainax was formed originally in the early 1980s as Daicon Film by Hideaki Anno, Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, Hiroyuki Yamaga, Takami Akai, Toshio Okada, Yasuhiro Takeda and Shinji Higuchi, with the group's first project being a short presented at the 20th Annual Japan National SF Convention in 1981. After another short was released by the group at the same convention in 1983, the group renamed itself as Gainax. After the rename, the company would go on to release their most famous work, Neon Genesis Evangelion.

Reception

Many of Studio Gainax's series have received critical acclaim, as well as several of their shows going on to become commercial and cultural successes, and have become well-lauded in the anime community, particularly Neon Genesis Evangelion and Gurren Lagann.
