About
Awaria is an indie video game by Polish developer Łukasz Piskorz in which players are tasked with repairing generators in haunted maintenance tunnels while avoiding ghosts. The game was released for free on December 16th, 2024 and quickly garnered an online fandom, resulting in numerous works of fan art and memes. Łukasz Piskorz also developed the game Helltaker, which garnered similar viral acclaim when it was released in 2020. The game's soundtrack was produced by Mittsies.
History
On December 16th, 2024, Łukasz Piskorz released Awaria on Steam[1] and Itchi.io.[2] The game's Itch.io description reads:
Welcome to the tunnel maintenance crew. If the generators fail, it's your job to fix them. Check what's wrong, craft all the needed parts and deliver them. It's simple. Just stay clear of anything that randomly cracks bolts of electricity, spews fire, throws sharp pieces of scrap at high-velocity or radiates with ominous green light.
Piskorz announced the release of the game via a post to X.[3] reading, "I've made a short game about working in haunted maintenance tunnels. Please check it out and let me know what you think. Thanks," garnering over 11,000 likes and 3,100 reposts in a day.
On the day of the game's release, its official soundtrack, produced by Mittsies, was posted to YouTube,[4] garnering over 34,000 views in a day.
Online Presence
The game became the subject of fan art on the day of its release. In particular, the ghost character Zmora, who the player can kiss during the game, became one of the most prevalent fan art subjects.
For example, on December 16th, 2024, X[5] user @ZipperQR posted a piece of Zmora fan art that gained over 860 likes in a day.
On the same day, X[6] user @_Anazel posted a piece of fan art depicting the protagonist and Zmora together, garnering over 640 likes in a day.
