Stank Memes is an internet slang term referring to poor quality memes which are often presented as the opposite of "dank memes".
Origin
On October 1st, 2015, the Barnie Sandlers Facebook page published a parody of the Duck Tales theme song, which included the line "always making good and never stank memes" (shown below).
Spread
On October 25th, 2015, Redditor TheLatestTrend submitted a post to /r/dankmemes[1] asking "What's the opposite of a dank meme?" to which a commenter replied "Dank memes are dank (Good) / Stank memes are stank (Bad)" (shown below).
On July 23rd, 2016, YouTuber MLG Stalin uploaded an MLG montage parody titled "totally accurate stank memes" (shown below).
On September 23rd, 2016, Redditor MediocreGimp submitted a stank memes-themed Bill and Phil image macro to /r/BillAndPhil[5] (shown below).
Elon Musk Tweet
On February 1st, 2019, Elon Musk tweeted[2] that he has just purchased the domain "stankmemes.com"[3] (shown below). Within 72 hours, the post gained over 140,000 likes and 22,000 retweets. The following day, Mashable[4] published an article about the tweet titled "Stankmemes.com owner runs Tesla, Space X."
