About

Squirrel Girl, or Doreen Green, is a superheroine in the Marvel Comics universe, created by writer Will Murray and artist Steve Ditko. She first appeared in the Marvel Super-Heroes comic in 1991 and has gained a significant online presence going into the 2010s and 2020s, especially with fan arts and memes. The character's inclusion in the multiplayer player-versus-player (PvP) shooter Marvel Rivals in late November 2024 sparked a series of jokes and memes about people finding the character attractive and many other compliments related to Squirrel Girl's design.

History

Unlike Marvel's mutants, Doreen Green, also known as. Squirrel Girl,[1] has a genetic anomaly that allows her to communicate with squirrels. The character debuted on November 12th, 1991, in the Marvel Super-Heroes comic volume 2 issue 8 titled "The Coming of… Squirrel Girl!" Doreen's early adventures often feature her teaming up with popular superheroes, including Iron Man and Spider-Man, showcasing her quirky yet effective heroics.[2]

On April 30th, 2022, the YouTube page Nerdgenic[3] posted a video titled "The Comic Book History Of Squirrel Girl," explaining the comic book origin of Squirrel Girl as well as her powers, and abilities. The video (seen below) amassed more than 4,700 views and 125 likes in two years.

Fandom

Squirrel Girl has garnered a dedicated fanbase on Reddit and X, former Twitter, which frequently creates fan art, cosplay, and applies some of the character's humorous catchphrases to social media. For example, on January 17th, 2016, DeviantArt[4] user @pungang uploaded a fan art drawing inspired by the character (seen below), which received roughly 8,000 views and 265 favorites in eight years.

Online Presence

Squirrel Girl gained viral attention in late November 2024, after the character was included in the multiplayer player-versus-player (PvP) shooter Marvel Rivals. On December 2nd, 2024, GameSpot's YouTube[5] channel posted a trailer of the character (seen below), which amassed roughly 1,200 views and 83 likes in a few hours.

The character's inclusion in the game also became the subject of memes and jokes on X. For example, on November 30th, 2024, X[6] user @NemuiDaysu posted a reaction video from Marvel's Spider-Man 2 (seen below), which amassed over 4 million views and 71,000 likes in two days.
