About
Sorry. Not Beautiful. And No Amount Of Authoritarian Tolerance Is Going To Change That is a quote by Canadian psychologist and professor Jordan Peterson said in reaction to the 2022 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue cover featuring model Yumi Nu. In response to the tweet, many Twitter users posted pictures mocking Peterson's looks, as well as crafting image caption memes with his text as a copypasta or catchphrase.
Origin
On May 16th, 2022, Jordan Peterson[1] quote-tweeted a New York Post story about model Yumi Nu discovering she was the cover model for the 2022 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue. Seemingly taking issue with Nu's appearance, Peterson said, "Sorry. Not beautiful. And no amount of authoritarian tolerance is going to change that." The tweet gained over 780 retweets, 10,000 likes and 1,200 quote-tweets in just over one hour (shown below).
Spread
In the immediate aftermath of Peterson's tweet, many people posted unflattering pictures of Peterson with his text as a caption, particularly the Jordan Peterson Crying meme. For example, on May 16th, 2022, Hasan Piker made such a tweet[2] that gained over 3,600 retweets and 100,000 likes in less than 24 hours (shown below, left). Twitter user @Otto_English[3] made a similar tweet, gaining over 13 retweets and 200 likes in a similar timeframe (shown below, right).
Others used the text to post humorous images alongside the copypasta. For example, Twitter user @colddoorhandles[4] posted a picture of Shrek's butt on May 16th, gaining over 70 likes in less than 24 hours (shown below, left). Twitter user @tinyweinerbabe[5] also posted an example featuring a picture of sick SpongeBob that gained over 50 retweets and 1,600 likes in a similar timeframe (shown below, right).
Amid the fallout from his tweet, Peterson announced he would lock himself out of Twitter due to the vicious insults, though many found his complaint hypocritical as he initiated the backlash with an insult of his own.
