Spooky Stories Chad and Spooky Stories Soyjaks refers to two images of GigaChad and Soyjak shining a flashlight upwards across their face as if they are telling a scary story. The images have been used in caption memes since the early 2020s, often paired with statements and facts that could appear scary and terrifying in a humorous way to the intended audience of the meme.
Origin
The author and origin of the image of GigaChad holding a flashlight below his face is currently unknown. On June 16th, 2022, X[1] user @SospechosoUsual shared the image as a part of a collection of GigaChad images, which is the earliest found post of the image online (shown below).
On October 16th, 2022, X[2] user @flamingeternity posted the earliest notable meme using the image, a Speech Bubbling quote post of a tweet reading, "In China there are literally Chinese people everywhere." The post, which presented the tweet as a scary story told by GigaChad, received over 110 reposts and 1,100 likes and was widely circulated through reposts.
Spread
In the following years, the image, along with a similar Soyjak edit in which a Markiplier Soyjak is holding a flashlight in a similar way, both saw use in caption memes, with the images often being paired with images of a scared GigaChad or a scared Soyjak.
For example, on April 30th, 2024, X[3] user @Baku88475562 posted a meme about video games and the investment company BlackRock, which received over 200 reposts and 2,400 likes in six months (shown below).
On May 16th, 2024, X[4] user @Nimbopill posted the image of Scary Stories GigaChad captioned, "Every newborn in the world has a 25% chance of being born Indian." The post (shown below) garnered over 1,700 reposts and 30,000 likes and was widely circulated in the following weeks.
On October 2nd, 2024, X[5] user @real_Chewiedog1 posted a version that referenced the recently popular Parkour Civilization meme. The post (shown below) received over 2,000 reposts and 22,000 likes in three weeks.
Both GigaChad and Soyjak versions of the meme saw more on X use in October 2024.
