Rick Perry in Saudi Arabia refers to a series of jokes, image macros and references to a series of pictures of Rick Perry in the country of Saudi Arabia. One picture in particular, of Perry sitting barefoot on sand dunes, received significant attention online.

Origin

On December 4th, 2017, Saudi Arabia's Energy Minister Khalid A. Al-Falih tweeted ^[1] a series of pictures from United States Secretary of Energy Rick Perry's visit to the country. Pictures feature the two spending time together, as well as one picture (shown below) of Perry sitting barefoot in the desert. The tweet received more than 900 retweets and 1,000 likes in less than two days.

Spread

Within 24 hours of the pictures appearing online, people began posting jokes about Perry. Twitter^[2] user @GMPaiella tweeted the picture with the caption "Rick Perry's an Instagram Thot now." The post (shown below, left) received more than 440 retweets and 2,500 likes in less than 24 hours. Twitter^[3] user @AnthonyAdragna tweeted, "Guys, I think @SecretaryPerry might drop an album." The post (shown below, center) received more than 800 retweets and 3,300 likes in 24 hours. Twitter user @K_Hubbs tweeted, "Rick Perry chilling on a sand dune in Saudi Arabia is the level of chill I aspire to be." The tweet (shown below, right) received more than 30 retweets and 130 likes in 24 hours.

On December 5th, Twitter^[6] published a Moments page to archive the reaction to the tweet.

On December 5th, Redditor ^[5] Kraken107 posted the picture in the the subreddit /r/photoshopbattles. Redditor idioshoops posted a picture of Perry on a boat in the water entitled "Adrift until the next election" (shown below).
