About
Nelson the Bull Terrier, also known as Walter, refers to a picture of a dog looking at a camera without his ears showing. The image grew popular on Twitter and Reddit, particularly the /r/okbuddyretard subreddit, in late 2018.
Origin
The original image of Nelson was posted to the dog's Twitter, @PupperNelson, on September 30th, 2018.[1] The tweet was captioned "when u open the front-facing camera on accident," and gained over 2,500 retweets and 9,300 likes (shown below).
Spread
After the tweet was posted, it began spreading on primarily Reddit's /r/okbuddyretard. There, some popular posts include one by user donkeyfromshrek5 that gained over 3,900 points (shown below, left). Another from user flabbagitch gained over 11,000 points (shown below, right).
Though posts featuring the dog gained high scores on the subreddit, it was also very unpopular with some users. On December 2nd,[2] moderators banned the spread of what they called "dog face" memes as well as Walter Clements references. Despite that, some users still attempted to sneak in memes with Nelson, including a post by F3v3rDr34m3r that gained over 9,600 points (shown below, left) and a post by Govern_ showing a different picture of Nelson, gaining over 410 points (shown below, right). The person behind the puppernelson account posted in the subreddit on December 7th explaining the origin of the face.[3]
