"Megalovania" (commonly styled as "MeGaLoVania") is a song composed by musician and video game developer Toby "Radiation" Fox. The song, featured on Fox's Earthbound Halloween Hack and the webcomic series Homestuck, experienced a rise of popularity after the release of the video game Undertale in September 2015, inspiring remixes and mash-ups.

Origin

In 2008, Toby Fox released the EarthBound Halloween Hack,[1] a ROM hack of the SNES video game Earthbound. During the final boss fight against Dr. Andonuts, a track produced for the game titled "Megalovania" plays. On December 5th, 2009, YouTuber[6] Cameron uploaded the song, garnering over 2.6 million views in 12 years (shown below).

In the following years, the song was included on the soundtrack for the webcomic Homestuck, first used on the Flash animation "[S] Wake"[2] (shown below). The song was included on the sixth soundtrack, released on Bandcamp[8] on June 13th, 2010.

On September 15th, 2015, Fox released the video game Undertale, which was met with critical acclaim. "Megalovania" was included in the soundtrack once again as the theme to the boss battle against Sans at the end of the game's "True Genocide" route. On September 17th, YouTuber[7] Elu Tran uploaded an extended version of the song, garnering over 35 million views in five years (shown below).

"Megalovania" Remixes

As Undertale grew in popularity, so did "Megalovania," inspiring a number of remixes later that year. On October 8th, 2015, musician and YouTuber[10] RichaadEB uploaded a metal cover of "Megalovania," garnering over 12.3 million views in five years (shown below, left). On October 11th, YouTuber[9] iwannabethecollector then uploaded a video mixing the original with RichaadEB's cover, garnering over 13.9 million views in a comparable span of time (shown below, right).

On October 23rd, YouTuber[11] BotanicSage uploaded a remix of "Megalovania" and "Waters of Nazareth" by the electronic band Justice, titled "Waters of Megalovania," gaining over 18 million views in five years (shown below).

On October 25th, 2015, YouTuber[12] Tsuko G. uploaded a kazoo cover of the song, gaining over 7.9 million views five years (shown below, left). On November 5th, 2015, mashup artist and YouTuber[13] Triple-Q then uploaded a mashup of “Renai Circulation” and "Megalovania," gaining over 517,000 views in a comparable span of time (shown below, right).

On January 19th, 2016, YouTuber[14] SharaX Official uploaded a remix of "Megalovania" and "Bonetrousle," garnering over 23 million views in just over five years (shown below, left). On January 8th, 2019, YouTuber[15] Drop The Bassline then uploaded a version of the song remixed by producer Oscar Santos, garnering over 28 million views in two years (shown below, right). As of February 23rd, 2021, these are the two most popular remixes on YouTube.

Notable Memes / Videos

"Megalovania" has featured in numerous memes and videos referencing Undertale and the character Sans since its release. For example, on May 9th, 2019, YouTuber[4] Jules Conroy uploaded a video where he programs his doorbell to play "Meagalovania," garnering over 11 million views in under two years (shown below).

On September 29th, Instagram[16] creator papyrus.mp4 uploaded a Baby Eats Camera meme featuring the song, garnering over 73,000 views in a year and a half (shown below).

On November 28th, YouTuber[17] Kadz uploaded a version of the Pufferfish Eating a Carrot video edited with "Megalovania," garnering over 13 million views in a comparable span of time (shown below, left). On May 8th, 2020, YouTuber[18] Myst the Hedgehog set a scene from the 2020 film Sonic: The Hedgehog to "Megalovania," garnering over 8 million views in nine months (shown below, right).
