The first definition on Urban Dictionary regarding the spin-off of m8 in February 16, 2005. M9 is thought to be a typo of m8 used on messaging services, then transferred to gaming. Because the way that the "9" key is close to the "8" key, many people use it as an alternative, often to mock the people that use the phrase m8. After "M8" was closely associated with the MLG meme, m9 followed shortly.
