Hampter refers to a series of videos centered around a picture of a frightened-looking hamster. After a YouTuber dubbed the character "Hampter," a small online community developed around the character, leading to multiple parodies across social media, as well as memes referencing the hamster.

Origin

On August 24th, 2014, Redditor[1] /u/menny91 posted an image to /r/funny with the caption, "My friend's hamster looks like a cartoon." The post gathered over 6,000 upvotes in nine years (seen below).


On October 5th, 2020, YouTuber[2] Boba Fett The Meme Lord posted a video in which the word "Hampter" appears over the picture of the hamster, gaining over 3,000 views (shown below).


Spread

Over the following several months, the video would be reposted by numerous accounts, the most popular of which was by BreadCrumbX,[3] whose October 27th repost gained over 251,000 views (shown below, left). The spread of the video led to further parodies. On October 31st, YouTuber[4] chobus posted a similar video which gained over 260,000 views (shown below, right).


YouTuber[5] Hunter Gruegel posted a parody animation video gaining over 5,200 views (shown below, right).
