Glup Shitto is a fake name used online to refer to returning characters from the Star Wars extended universe in newer mainstream Star Wars media, which are known and praised by hardcore fans but unknown to the more general audience.
Origin
The name Glup Shitto was originally invented by Tumblr user gomjabbar on September 3rd, 2020 (shown below).[1] The post gained over 33,000 notes.
Spread
The name grew popular among Star Wars fans on Tumblr amidst the airing of the second season of the series The Mandalorian which saw the return of several characters previously exclusive to the extended universe (notably comprising of Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars: Rebels). Others joked that Glup Shitto was the canonical name of Baby Yoda (examples shown below).
On December 13th, 2020, a definition of the term "Glup Shitto" was uploaded on Urban Dictionary[3] (shown below).
Glup Shitto eventually caught the attention of the news outlet Polygon[2] when journalist Maddy Myers posted a break-down of the spreading meme on December 18th, 2020.
