About
Gamer Word is an internet slang term sometimes used to reference the N-word, a racial epithet toward Black people. The phrase "gamer word" came to be associated with the racial slur after PewDiePie's PUBG Livestream N-Word Controversy in late 2017 and after a Twitter user defended PewDiePie's use of the word by calling it a "gamer word" instead of a racial slur.
Origin
In September 2017, YouTuber PewDiePie used a racial epithet while livestreaming himself playing PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (PUBG). After firing at an enemy player, he blurted out the expression, "What a fucking n----r" before apologizing and saying, "I don't mean that in a bad way."
On September 11th, 2017, YouTuber[3] SomeBlackGuy posted a video titled, "PewDiePie Says The GAMER Word," addressing PewDiePie's slur outburst and gathering over 500,000 likes in seven years (seen below).
Political commentator Ian Miles Cheong referred to PewDiePie's use of the N-word as having occurred during a "heated gaming moment"[2] soon after the stream on September 10th, 2017.
On December 28th, 2018, Twitter / X user @tonyterwey[7] posted a series of replies to @anildash[1] and @JordanUhl, writing, "not that pewds ACTUALLY did anything except say a gamer word once during a video game." When pressed on what he meant by "gamer word," the user wrote, "Yeah, a word that is common in gaming."
Spread
On September 12th, 2020, the U.S. Navy's Esports team Goats & Glory played Among Us on Twitch and hosted other players who named their characters "Japan 1945," "Nagasaki" and "Gamer Word." YouTuber Mutahar "Muta" Anas and X[4] user @OrdinaryGamers noted the use of "gamer word" to name a black-colored character, gathering over 10,000 likes in four years (seen below).
On November 22nd, 2021, YouTuber[5] DonutOperator posted about being banned from Twitch for saying a "gamer word," and then clarifying that he did not say the N-word, but instead used a homophobic slur. The YouTuber's post was heavily criticized and subsequently deleted by him (repost shown below).
A July 9th, 2023 discussion on Steam[6] community boards shows gamers discussing the use of the phrase "gamer word" in lieu of the actual slur.
