Overview
Prince William Pegging refers to the rumors perpetuated by the gossip page Deuxmoi in late July 2022 about an alleged extra-marital affair occurring between a British royal who reportedly engages in pegging and whose wife who does not enjoy the act. While no names were given in the anonymous tip about the purported affair, Prince William was quickly pegged as the "peggable prince," prompting plentiful posts on Twitter by many who reacted to the rumor through various memes and discussions surrounding the controversy. The hashtag "#PrinceOfPegging" also trended alongside the viral story.
Background
On July 27th, 2022, the social gossip blog page Deuxmoi posted an anonymous tip on its Instagram Story that they received about an alleged affair within the royal family that is an open secret in London. According to Deuxmoi and the post, a royal family member actively engaged in extramarital acts with other aristocrats on account of his love for the act of pegging, which his "old-fashioned wife" refused to do to him. Looking at the current list of royal family members still living in London who are married, the natural conclusion drawn by many online was that it was Prince William, the grandson of Queen Elizabeth II who previously had multiple cheating rumors in the past. The Instagram post by Deuxmoi[1] was quickly spread to other social media sites for further conversation to take place (shown below).
"This is so salacious I’m almost too shook to share with you (But will anyway). This British Royal extramarital affair is an open secret in London and amongst the English aristo set, and is the talk of every party, I was told the real reason for affair was the royal’s love of pegging, which the wife is far too old-fashioned to engage in. The wife doesn’t mind her and in fact prefer her husband getting his sexual needs fulfilled elsewhere, as long as things don’t become emotional, which was the case with the last woman. #PrinceOfPegging."
Online Reactions
Following Deuxmoi's Instagram post on July 27th, 2022, the initial online reaction to the rumor was largely confusion from people who weren't aware of what "pegging" was, causing Twitter user @larkdeta[2] to notice that the Google search results for "pegging" had seen a large increase since the gossip hit, earning over 600 likes in two hours (shown below).
Many references to "Prince William" and "pegging" almost immediately flooded social media platforms on July 27th as users started to post reactions and speculation. While some shared previous media photos of Prince William in weird or awkward poses in reference to pegging, some took a more direct approach through jokes and memes. For example, on July 28th, the Irish airline company Ryanair made a Twitter[3] post in which they said "William, we saved you a seat," while uploading an image of a row of airplane seats with one of the armrests raised up, presumably for him to sit on, gaining over 1,600 likes in three hours (shown below).
Due to the conversation, the hashtag #PrinceofPegging quickly picked up steam, becoming the number one trending hashtag in multiple parts of the web early in the morning of July 28th, prompting many users to post about the hashtag itself in reference to William and the rumor. For example, on July 28th, Twitter user @ArchLiliHazMeg[4] uploaded a photo of Prince Harry smiling while looking down at a phone, captioning it as though he's smiling at the exposure being done to William because of the hashtag, receiving over 870 likes and 110 retweets in four hours (shown below).
