On December 10th, 2023, conservative activist Chris Rufo published a blog post[6] and a thread on X[5] raising accusations that Gay had violated Harvard's policies against plagiarism by paraphrasing and failing to properly cite sources in her academic work.

On January 2nd, 2024, the Harvard Crimson[7] published an article announcing that Gay would be resigning from her position. That day, The New York Times[4] published Gay's resignation letter. In the letter, Gay stated that she believed it was "in the best interests of Harvard" for her to resign, and found it "frightened to be subjected to personal attacks and threats fueled by racial animus."
