Dudes Deciding an IG Story is an exploitable meme format depicting a character looking down a branching path of red arrows under a variation of the phrasal template "X deciding an IG story," "X" being a type of person, with images relating to that type of person's Instagram story edited at the ends of each red arrow. The meme format, which shares similarities to starter pack memes, was popularized on Instagram in late December 2024, garnering viral spread to sites including Threads and Reddit.
Origin
On December 23rd, 2024, Instagram[1] user throwingfits posted a meme using a stock image[2] of a person looking confused at three branching red arrow paths. The meme is captioned, "Dudes deciding an IG story." At the end of one arrow is two album covers, one for The New Sound by Geordie Greep, labeled "music no one wants to hear," at the end of another is a pint of beer and at the end of the third is a photo of two guys photographing the sunset labeled, "mysterious pic of nature." The post gained over 25,000 likes in a week.
Spread
The meme garnered viral spread over the following days, inspiring new variations. On December 23rd, 2024, Instagram[3] user scoobydoofruitsnacks reposted it from throwingfits, garnering over 166,000 likes in a week. On December 24th, Instagram[4] user pairofkingspod posted a version about "fashion dudes" deciding their IG story, garnering over 5,000 likes in a week.
On December 26th, Threads[5] user @succymeme.s posted a variation of the original meme replacing several of the images on the red arrows, garnering over 19,000 likes and 1,800 reposts in five days. On December 29th, a version of the meme about "beer dudes" was posted to /r/CraftBeer[6] that gained over 280 upvotes in two days.
On the same day, Instagram[7] user the.soundgeist posted a version of the meme that garnered over 19,000 likes in the same span of time.
On December 30th, 2024, Threads[8] user @xiu_shoegaze posted a version of the meme about Hideo Kojima choosing his IG story, garnering over 5,800 likes in a day.
