Bem-Te-Vi refers to a series of poop remixes based on calls of the great kiskadee, a flycatcher bird native to Brazil. The meme takes its name from the Brazilian name of the bird, which is also the onomatopoeic interpretation of the bird's call. The format gained viral popularity among Brazilian users on social media in early August 2021.

Origin

The great kiskadee, called "bem-te-vi" in Brazil, is a flycatcher bird of the tyrant flycatcher family living in Brazil and the only member of the genus "Pitangus." Multiple videos with recordings of the bird's singing are available on YouTube^[1]^[2] (examples shown below).

In early May 2021, Instagram^[3] user shitpost_itz posted the earliest found poop meme that used the sound effect of the bem-te-vi's call as a punchline, syncing it to a video of Big Floppa. A reupload of the video to YouTube^[4] received over 104,000 views in three months (shown below).

Spread

Following the viral spread of shitpost_itz's video, the sound effect gained popularity as a punchline for short poops on Instagram and iFunny. For example, on May 19th, 2021, iFunny^[5] user the_cock_johnsons posted the earliest found derivative meme using the sound effect, a Despicable Me edit that gained over 2,800 smiles in three months (shown below, left). A July 7th YouTube^[6] reupload of the meme received over 216,000 views in one month. On June 5th, 2021, iFunny^[7] user Artz_ posted an edit that received 180 smiles in two months (shown below, right).

In June and July 2021, a number of Bem-Te-Vi memes were reuploaded to YouTube. For example, on June 23rd, 2021, YouTuber^[8] N3lipet1c0s posted a compilation of Bem-Te-Vi memes that gained over 64,400 views in two months (shown below).

The meme achieved its viral point on August 11th, 2021, when Twitter^[9] user @terralimite posted a Bem-Te-Vi edit of the main theme of the Brazilian sitcom A Grande Família. The edit received over 869,000 views, 11,300 retweets and 43,100 likes in two days (shown below).

Later on that same day, Twitter^[10] user @Ikazvyr posted a meme that gained over 1 million views, 9,700 retweets and 41,000 likes, with more viral examples (mainly remixes of various TV show opening themes) being posted in the following days.
