About
Autotuned Stories refers to a series of videos in which people relay confessions or stories while using auto-tune. The method of storytelling became popular on TikTok and Twitter in 2019 and was typically used to make light of a difficult or heavy story.
Origin
On February 9th, 2019, Twitter user @AliGriffin_ posted a video that was sent to her from her brother in which she shows her the dishwasher overflowed using auto-tune to tell the story (shown below). The video gained over 590,800 likes and 190,400 retweets in a year.

Spread
On November 11th, 2019, TikToker @drewgunby uploaded one of the earliest TikTok auto-tuned story videos which received over 801,500 likes in two months and recounted a time he accidentally sent two coworkers to the hospital (shown below, left). On November 26th, TikToker @chowlan96 uploaded another auto-tuned story about being an RA (shown below, center). The video gained over 165,700 likes in two months. On December 6th, TikToker @vickyyelhelbawi uploaded another story which garnered over 190,500 likes in a month (shown below, right).

That same day, Twitter user @NickStopTalking uploaded a video of himself tell the story of how he came out but used auto-tune (shown below). The video gained over 12,100 likes and 1,300 retweets in a month.

The next day, other Twitter users like @BrandonTClark97 shared their coming out stories using the same format. Twitter user @BrandonTClark97's video accumulated over 90 likes in a month (shown below). On January 13th, 2020, i-D[1] published an article on the auto-story phenomenon.
