The National Dex has returned in Home, and Gamefreak announced free updates and DLC for SwSh for future transfer. I think now’s about time that we Pokémon fans realize how much we tore our community apart in the months before that. We did eventually get what we wanted – a reason to “catch ‘em all” again – but at the cost of creating a toxic atmosphere for those against and in defense of the dex cut. I want us to mend ourselves together by apologizing. I’ll start.
In the months before and after SwSh’s release, I was obsessed with defending Gamefreak. Simply put, I did it in retaliation for how I was treated on this site for showing empathy towards a company. Pun called me “Kuntsuta” for understanding that putting in a National Dex in SwSh within months would lead to overworking. (They still called me that when I took a hiatus.) That was the first time I’ve ever had my internet name turned against me. And mind you, I’ve had it since 2013, so it hurt even more.
“If you punch someone, expect to be punched back.” That’s a lesson my father taught me. So I thought, “if I’m gonna be insulted for sharing my own opinion, I have every right to mock those guys back.” From then on, I went out of my way to tackle misinformation based on information gained from different Twitter users with experience in game design and translation. I knew I would get downvoted, but I at least wanted to make the effort since hardly anyone else on this site showed the same empathy.
The problem was that I and others were too mad to really understand each other’s perspectives. I was so caught up in my own anger that I forgot to stay respectful. So to the people I offended, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have left my own pride get the better of me over a name.
I know I don’t have the best portfolio here on KnowYourMeme, so you can downvote me if you really don’t feel like sharing. I understand it’s hard to admit you were wrong, so I don’t blame you for being adamant. But I just wanted to get this off my chest to truly move on.
