201 is gone and the troll face has left with it, those times were very simple when it came to memes. Just simple comics ending with a rage face or two
2017 The world has taken a step forward, more serious or offensive (yet still funny) memes.I know a while back we did have things such as pools closed ,but still even the "Normies" are getting in on the action

I prefer older memes in concept. They lasted longer, were clever, and came naturally, but some don't age well over time. Unlike nowadays where memes now don't have as much substance, are more novelty, and die in less than 2 months, though new memes tend to be running the meme economy now though, so there isn't a whole lot I can do about it.
I didn't know Trollface was 1800 years old. Damn, that meme lasted for a while huh?
Older. I think sometime within the last few years people forgot what internet memes really were--injokes and references within a community that eventually leaked out and spread, ingraining themselves into the internet for months or years.
How many memes from 2016 are still actively being used today? From 2015? Meanwhile, Pepe's probably the strongest it's ever been and it's nearly a decade old. Now, you'll be lucky if a Trump meme's still being used next month, let alone next year.

Personally I still like those old memes back when YTPs were at their peak of popularity.
They were simple and yet they had so much variety.
The modern memes that I don't think passed the test of time are the memes from 2010 to 2013.The media keep using them for ads, they were kinda fun when they came out but now they're bland.
A thing that I noticed is these days is the more memes have less variety and less possibilities to make new jokes the more popular they get on social networks.
Don't get me wrong, simplicity is better than being too complex but there is a limit:
Cash me ousside,Winnie the Pooh dancing,How Italians do things, all these are just uninspired and bland.
The only modern meme that is still used would be Baneposting. It's been 5 years and people still strong.
