They probably would deter opinions if they actually did anything but besides bury your comment (which doesn't even really do anything, people are probably still going to read it.), and give your ego a slight slap, they don't actually really do anything. Hell just take a look at Lisa Lombardo. Gets downvote karma bombed like every post and just still keeps on truckin'. I think given that fact we can safely arrive to the conclusion that they don't deter opinions given the fact that karma really doesn't even have any value.
