Seriously this bugged my mind for a long time. Would their friends log on to inform the entire userbase about it or how inactive they've become?

We don't.
Probably not, you just leave without a trace. I'm friends with some users on fb and if they died i'd probably make a thread
We don't know for sure. The rule I go by is at least a couple of months without ANY activity. It isn't a written rule.
If I know, some users tend to give the accout to someone as a "last wish", either a friend or a familiar.
I say it because I had see it before.
We don't really, but for me If a person's legitimately active and one day just suddenly disappears without a notice to anyone, even close friends, then I consider them dead. If they were always quiet and just faded away then they left.
Did that user die or did they simply decide to stop posting? We have no way of knowing, one way or another…but I should add that it isn't safe to assume anyone is dead if they simply stop posting. It's not really worth worrying about
I have similar thoughts about this semi-frequently. A few years back I followed a fanfic writer and one day her mother posted on the her page that she had died. Quite a surreal feeling actually.
I tend to wonder myself if I were to die if anyone would go onto my accounts and leave an update that I passed on, and would I actually want them to do that?
I assume that in the event someone died, a family member or close friend would post the information on their account.
When a user stops posting for no apparent reason, it's safe to assume they just stopped posting for no apparent reason. Edd Gould, kitty0706, and Monty Oum's deaths were all isolated incidents. It's incredibly unlikely that any user here will die within the next twenty years.
And besides, what would we do if we found out they died? Life goes on. We'd just keep up the usual posting, meme research, and general nonsense whether we knew one of our own had died or not.
I remember there was a news article a couple years ago about how people have started putting "online death notifications" in their wills, where they'd give the executor of the estate all their passwords and he'd post the messages notifying everyone the person died.
I hope when I die some person finds all of my accounts and leaves some sort of thing like "this user passed away xx-xx-xxxx and you can find out more about it here, -(blah estate)". I'd feel sorry for whoever would have to do it though.
I would be cool if we all had time to update our bios on stuff before we passed on though.
I've yet to disclose any of my passwords to a person or a list/will. If I died tomorrow, my activity would cease from the internet entirely. It's partiality cuz I don't trust anyone with them, and partially because I have at least 20 passwords for probably 100+ social media, email, forums accounts, plus my computers/cellphones/encrypted drives. I mean I have 7 email addresses alone if that tells you anything.
Maybe I should consider disclosing a couple of them and passwords to my devices in a will, but if I die tomorrow, my accounts would be white noise in cyberspace and my devices would be pieces of junk until they were formatted.
>inb4 my accounts are already white noise
>inb4 my devices are already useless

I have terrible news, I regret to inform you that the user known as dac has died. He was a good friend of mine, but last night, He was getting mad tail at the local bar by showing his knowledge on anime. Unfortunatly, the girls couldn't contain their orgasms, and he drowned in pussy.
Kinda off topic, but when I'm playing an online game and someone gets kicked for being AFK for a long time, I wonder how many people have died of a heart attack or something similer in the middle of playing a game. It might sound absurd, but I'm pretty sure that it's happened before somewhere. Then I start wondering if any of the AFKs in the server I was playing in also have met that fate. It gets pretty chilling if you think about it.

You don't.
We all know we get transferred to the Matrix when we die, anyways…
I wish.
I don't there's anyway to know outside of someone using their account to tell you, and even then they could be lying.

Sometimes I wonder if a user who's becomes mysteriously inactive for a long time has died….
It's so freaky to think about because it's rare for a family member to come and say people have died… So you'll never know for sure.
@Jimmy Lethal
I don't know about you, but if you were to suddenly die, I don't think there's really any way to get log-in information for family members. I guess I should keep instructions somewhere for if I die.
@Snickerway
20 years!? I don't know how many users there are on KYM, but it's safe to say there will be several of them dying in the next few years.

"In the next few years"
Damn, you say this as if KYMers have the lifespan of a fruit fly. What the hell would make us die so fast? Is it the memes? Has to be the memes. Always suspected maymays were lethal.
I'm talking about all the users on this site.
Again, I don't know how many there are, but some people die young. Car accidents, illnesses, possibly suicide. Not that I want to depress you with reasons for death, but with a large group of people, the chances of one of them dying young is also bigger.
Maybe it will be a commentator who doesn't really post a lot. I'm not just talking about people who you see on the forums a lot.
