Actually, they were invented during World War I in order to inflict mass casualties and terror among the soldiers that fought in the trenches of the Western Front. Mustard gas was just a German corporal who ate way too much bratwurst and hefeweizen and the fart went downwind towards the Allies. During the signing of the Treaty of Versailles, the Germans tried to use the now classic retort of "He who dealt it, smelt it" but the British and French were still reeling from the pain and horror that Corporal Furz Ekelhaft inflicted upon them.
